Canada on Obama
Geoffrey Canada on CNN, weighing in on President Obama’s speech on education:
“This president did something I have been waiting for my entire life, have a Democratic president that absolutely touched the third rail of Democratic politics. He said, our schools are failing. We’re going to hold teachers accountable. We’re going to fund education, but we’re going to expect results. And, if you don’t produce results, out you go. This has never happened in a Democratic president before. And I think we’re getting ready for change in America.”

Barack Obama, interviewed last weekend on MTV News:
“There is a great example, the Harlem Children’s Zone, a guy named Geoffrey Canada started this. It has a comprehensive approach to young people in that area, and you are starting to see graduation rates go up, college-attendance rates go up, reductions in terms of delinquency, so we can make progress on this stuff, but it takes sustained effort.”

This Monday (tomorrow), Geoffrey Canada will be interviewed as part of “Where We Stand: America’s Schools in the 21st Century,” a documentary hosted by Judy Woodruff and broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. In New York, it’s on channel 13 at 10 p.m.
